So far, 15 people have lost their lives as a result of the eruption of the Mount Nyiragongo volcano in North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This was confirmed today by Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya.

Nine people were killed in a road accident while trying to flee the city to the northwest, to the town of Sake. At another point, two other citizens were burned to death.

Also, four prisoners who tried to escape from the central prison of Munzenze, located in the city of Goma, were captured, which caused their death, said the spokesman of the executive.

A total of 17 localities on the outskirts of Goma were affected by the magma. Among them is Buhene, the place where the lava flow stopped early Sunday morning.

The magma destroyed hundreds of houses, schools and health structures in its path, although exact figures are not yet available.

The military governor of North Kivu, Constant Ndami, ordered the country’s armed forces and police to ensure the security of the city and evacuation routes to avoid cases of robbery and barbarism.

In addition, more than 150 children have been separated from their families due to the volcanic eruption of Mount Nyiragongo.

According to Unicef, more than 5,000 people crossed the border into neighboring Rwanda. And at least 25,000 were displaced to the nearby town of Sake.

The eruption of Mount Nyiragongo began around 19:00 local time on Saturday.

Mount Nyiragongo is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It is often climbed by tourists who want to see the lava lake in its crater.
