The victim, who remains anonymous, was with her friend when the stranger approached them both, police said.

Investigators said the man repeated the question several times and after being ignored began to slowly walk away, but then turned around and stabbed the girl.

She was transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia in stable condition.

The suspect fled the scene

This was just one of several stabbing attacks that occurred overnight in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, reports the New York Post.

Police say at least three other people were stabbed.

About 15 minutes after the attack on the train, a 39-year-old man was stabbed in the neck during an argument with another man in Kingsbridge Heights in the Bronx.

He was transported to Barnabas Hospital in stable condition, but the suspect fled.

Photos taken at the scene show blood splattered on the ground.

In another incident, a 24-year-old man was stabbed in the back and right thigh around midnight while walking in Hamilton Heights.

He was transported to Harlem Hospital in stable condition, but police say he was uncooperative with the investigation.
