In a remarkable achievement, Abi Strate, a 24-year-old ski jumper from Calgary, secured her first World Cup victory on January 1. Competing on the large hill in Oberstdorf, Germany, Strate amassed a total of 268.2 points, surpassing her nearest competitor, Zeng Ping of China, by 10.5 points.

This victory is particularly noteworthy for Strate, who finished second in Oberstdorf two years prior. “This has been my dream for as long as I can remember. I was uncertain if I would ever achieve it, but I kept pursuing that goal, and here I am—I did it!” she stated following her win. Her journey has been a blend of challenges and successes, and this achievement represents years of dedication and commitment.

Overcoming challenges and embracing support

Strate’s journey to success has faced several challenges. After finishing seventh in a previous competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, she reflected on the pressures experienced during the season. “I think I’ve been a bit tense this winter, especially after my strong early-season performances. I was focusing too much on chasing results rather than being present during my jumps,” Strate stated.

Support from her coaching team

A significant factor in Strate’s success is the unwavering support of her coaching team based in Slovenia. This collaboration has enabled her to strategize effectively, concentrating on her technique and mindset. “We decided to return to training to refine my jumps. Just being able to communicate and process things with my coaches helped me find my calm before the competition today,” she explained.

In the first round of the competition, Strate showcased remarkable talent by achieving the best jump of the day, soaring an impressive 136 meters and earning 146.1 points. This performance placed her in the lead, providing a solid 15-point advantage heading into the final round. She remarked, “It was one of those moments where everything clicked perfectly. I had been struggling with my inrun position, but we simplified things, and it made all the difference. I hit the take-off flawlessly and maintained my composure in the air.”

Historical moments and future aspirations

The podium in Oberstdorf featured notable competitors, including Zeng Ping, who secured second place with a score of 257.7 points. Germany’s Selina Freitag finished third with 257.3 points. Zeng’s achievement marks a historic milestone for China, as it is her first time standing on a World Cup podium. “I am thrilled; this experience is a dream come true for me,” she stated.

Preparing for future competitions

Looking ahead, Strate’s success this season includes two silver medals in big hill events in Lillehammer, Norway, and Wisla, Poland, along with an Olympic test event in Predazzo, Italy. She was also part of the Canadian team’s historic bronze medal win in the mixed team event during the Beijing Olympics. With the large hill competition making its Olympic debut in Milano-Cortina this February, Strate aims to build on her current momentum.

Abi Strate’s recent victory in Oberstdorf has significantly boosted her confidence, with the athlete expressing excitement for future competitions. She stated, “I have always dreamt of being at the top, and now I know it’s within my reach. I plan to soak in every moment of this victory and use it as motivation for future competitions.”

This remarkable achievement positions Strate as a rising star in ski jumping, serving as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes. Her journey highlights the importance of perseverance, dedication, and the support of a committed team.
