In a landmark achievement for the cinema industry, AMC Theatres has shattered its own records, welcoming over 10.2 million moviegoers during the debut weekend of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This historic milestone, spanning Wednesday through Sunday, marks the highest-attended weekend of the decade for AMC, both domestically and internationally.
The unprecedented success was largely attributed to the monumental opening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day which generated a staggering $355 million domestically and $927 million globally. This remarkable performance positioned the film as the second-highest domestic and global opening weekend gross for any movie title in history, according to media reports.
Record-Breaking Revenue and Attendance
AMC’s record-setting weekend was not only driven by ticket sales but also by a surge in food and beverage revenue which also set a new all-time record. This achievement surpassed the previous high set during the opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
The enthusiasm for Spider-Man: Brand New Day was evident in the daily records set by AMC. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday each marked the highest admission revenues for their respective weekdays in AMC’s history. Additionally, AMC’s premium formats, such as Dolby Cinema, experienced exceptional demand, contributing to the highest-grossing Dolby Cinema weekend in the company’s history.
The Odyssey Continues to Draw Crowds
While Spider-Man: Brand New Day stole the spotlight, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued to captivate audiences, particularly on IMAX screens. The AMC Lincoln Square 13 location in New York operated around-the-clock IMAX 70mm showtimes for the third consecutive weekend, underscoring the sustained demand for premium-format moviegoing.
The success of The Odyssey has been nothing short of phenomenal. The film has delivered the most successful IMAX run in AMC’s history through its first two weekends, highlighting the enduring appeal of premium theatrical experiences.
AMC’s CEO Reflects on the Historic Weekend
AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron expressed his congratulations to the cast and crew of Spider-Man: Brand New Day as well as the teams at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. He emphasized that this historic weekend serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring value of the theatrical experience.
Aron noted that this is the ninth movie since March to deliver a blockbuster opening weekend, demonstrating that audiences continue to embrace the cinema experience when studios release compelling films backed by strong marketing campaigns. He also highlighted the hard work of the more than 30,000 AMC and ODEON employees worldwide, who played a crucial role in welcoming and serving the record number of guests.
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey underscores the resilience and vibrancy of the cinema industry. As moviegoers continue to flock to theaters, the future of theatrical exhibitors like AMC looks brighter than ever.
