An animal that remained frozen for 24,000 years in Siberia has been revived

An animal frozen for more than 24,000 years was revived by Russian scientists who discovered it on a watery surface in Siberia.

In this case, it was found in Siberian permafrost, a kind of soil that is completely frozen year-round, in the Alayeza River in the Russian Arctic.

As soon as the frozen animal was discovered, Russian scientists carried out a thawing process that allowed it to survive after thousands of years, in a cryptobiotic condition.

Stas Malavin, a researcher at the terrestrial cryology laboratory of Russia’s third scientific center of biology, said that cryptobiosis occurs when an animal’s metabolism comes to a complete halt, but manages to come back to life.

The study published in the journal Current biology determines that the researchers used radiocarbon dating to determine how many years the frozen animal had remained this way.

After a series of studies, the specimen was revived and managed to reproduce asexually.

The scientists concluded that rotifers are animals that survive slow freezing thanks to a mechanism that protects their cells and organs at extreme temperatures.

Specialists have also discovered mammoths and bears frozen in the Siberian permafrost.
