Amazon’s Zoox has recently received approval to launch commercial operations, and Tesla has unveiled its futuristic Cybercab though it has not yet been deployed in the wild. In cities where Tesla is running pilot programs, more familiar-looking Tesla models are currently handling the driving tasks.

The safety of these autonomous vehicles has been a hot topic. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Waymo vehicles are involved in crashes 68% less often than human-driven cars. This statistic is based on miles driven and indicates that Waymo vehicles are significantly less likely to be the cause of a collision.

However, it’s important to note that this research compared Waymo vehicles to all human drivers, including those with poor driving habits. Many safety experts argue that autonomous systems should be held to a higher standard, perhaps comparing them to professional drivers or those exhibiting good behavior.

Unusual Challenges and Human Interaction

While robotaxis excel in avoiding common human errors like speeding and distraction, they can encounter unique challenges. For instance, a reporter in Los Angeles experienced a situation where a Waymo vehicle stopped in the middle of an intersection, blocking traffic and causing a delay. The vehicle’s inability to respond to the urgent pleas of construction workers highlighted the complexities of human-machine interaction.

Such incidents underscore the need for continuous improvement. Companies like Waymo are actively working on enhancing their vehicles’ responses to spontaneous human problems. More data and real-world experience are crucial for teaching these vehicles how to handle a wide range of situations.
