Beyond Ceasefires: The Unseen Reality of Gaza’s Conflict

Uncover the truth behind the so-called ceasefires in Gaza and the broader implications for the region.

Beyond Ceasefires: The Unseen Reality of Gaza's Conflict

The landscape of the Israel-Palestine conflict has evolved significantly over the past few years, marked by devastating violence and shifting global perceptions. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 73,000with over 1,000 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire. This ceasefire, brokered by the United States between Israel and Hamas, has largely faded from international headlines as attention shifted to conflicts in Iran and Lebanon. However, the reality on the ground in Gaza remains grim.

Tariq Kenney-Shawa, an associate fellow at the Palestinian think tank Al-Shabaka, highlights the paradox of the ceasefire movement. Initially, the call for a ceasefire was a unifying slogan that garnered substantial support. It was a vague yet powerful rallying cry that brought together a diverse movement against the genocide in Gaza. However, the ceasefire agreement signed in October of last year has proven to be largely performativewith Israel continuing its military operations and blockades.

The Hollow Promise of Ceasefires

The ceasefire agreement, while existing on paper, has not translated into tangible peace for Palestinians. Israel has continued its airstrikes and expanded its control over Gaza, reducing the habitable area for Palestinians from 53% to just 30-40% of the original territory. Humanitarian aid remains insufficient, with Israel allowing only commercial aid that Palestinians cannot afford, while essential supplies like tents and building materials are blocked.

Kenney-Shawa emphasizes that the ceasefire has been weaponizedcreating a false sense of resolution while the violence continues at a slower, more insidious pace. This piecemeal approach makes it difficult for the international community to oppose Israel’s actions effectively. The movement for Palestinian rights, which had gained significant momentum, now finds itself in a state of limbo, unsure of how to proceed.

The Broader Context: U.S. and Israeli Strategic Moves

The recent interim ceasefire signed by President Donald Trump to end military operations in Iran and Lebanon for 60 days adds another layer to the complex geopolitical landscape. This agreement aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, the deal also includes a $300 billion reconstruction fund, with no obligation for the U.S. to contribute.

Kenney-Shawa warns of new initiatives like Section 224, which seeks to integrate the U.S. military-industrial complex with Israeli defense and technology sectors. This move is seen as a strategic effort by Israel to deepen its entrenchment with the U.S, recognizing the growing criticism of Israel within the U.S. and the current political climate favorable to Israeli interests.

The Trump administration’s Board of Peaceestablished to govern the ceasefire in Gaza, has also come under scrutiny. Despite the ceasefire agreement, Israel has refused to implement key provisions, continuing its airstrikes and expanding its control over Gaza. This raises questions about the effectiveness of such agreements and the true intentions behind them.

The Call for Arms Embargoes and Beyond

The movement for Palestinian rights has long advocated for an arms embargo on Israel, seeing it as a crucial step towards ending the violence. However, Kenney-Shawa argues that an arms embargo alone may not be sufficient. Israel’s reliance on U.S. weapons for its military capabilities in Gaza, the West Bank, Iran, and Lebanon underscores the depth of this partnership.

There is a danger that an arms embargo could be seen as a mere symbolic gesture, allowing politicians to claim progress without addressing the root causes of the conflict. Kenney-Shawa suggests that the movement may need to push for more comprehensive measures, such as sanctions and deeper scrutiny of the U.S.-Israel relationship, to achieve lasting change.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, the international community faces a critical juncture. The illusion of ceasefires and the strategic maneuvers by Israel and the U.S. highlight the need for a more nuanced understanding of the conflict and a commitment to genuine peace and justice for Palestinians.
