When asked Monday about his earlier comment calling Russian leader Vladimir Putin a “murderer,” President Joe Biden groaned, muttered and fell silent.

“Do you still believe, sir, that he’s a murderer?” Biden was asked during a press conference Monday.

“I laugh, too,” Biden said by way of reply as he bought time to formulate a response.

“Actually, I, well, look, he’s made it clear that,” Biden responded hesitantly.

“The answer I think in the past essentially acknowledged that he was, or certain things he would do or did,” Biden said about eight or nine seconds later.

Biden tried to find some wiggle room in his comment.

“But look, when I was asked that question on the air, I answered it honestly, but it’s not much…,” Biden said.

“I don’t think it matters much in terms of the next meeting we’re going to have,” he said.

In March, Biden was asked during an interview with ABC if he thought Putin was a “murderer.”

“Mmm hmm, yes I do,” was current U.S. President Biden’s direct response.

On Monday, Biden also praised Putin while booking something to meet Wednesday with the Russian leader, according to the New York Post .

“I’ve met with him. He’s brilliant, he’s tough. And he has struck me as, as they used to say when we played ball, a worthy adversary,” he said.

Biden said that “all the world leaders here, as members of NATO, who have spoken today, have thanked me for meeting with Putin.”

“There were probably about 10 or 12 who spoke to him, saying they were glad I did that, and I was going to do that,” he said.

Biden claimed that “I haven’t encountered any world leaders” who thought his meeting with Putin was “too soon.”
