Jim Wells, a Bossier City native, is set to be enshrined in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2027. This honor caps off a distinguished coaching career that began at Northwestern State University and continued at the University of Alabama. Wells’ induction will take place during the Hall of Fame weekend in Natchitoches from June 24-26, 2027.

Wells took over the Northwestern State baseball program in 1990, inheriting a team that had endured nine consecutive losing seasons. His impact was immediate and profound. In his first season, he orchestrated a 17-win turnaround and by his second year, the Demons claimed the Southland Conference title in 1991. This success was not a fluke; Wells led the team to three conference championships in a four-year span.
The foundation of Wells’ success was his relentless focus on work ethic and attention to detail. Under his leadership, the Demons achieved a remarkable 192-89 record over five seasons, setting a program-record winning percentage of .683. His ability to turn around a struggling program quickly made him a sought-after coach and a magnet for top talent.
A Legacy of Excellence
Wells’ influence extended beyond Northwestern State. He spent 16 years as the head coach at Alabama where he compiled an impressive 817-411 record. During his tenure, he secured 14 NCAA Regional berthsfive conference titles and three College World Series berths. In 1997, he led the crimson tide to the College World Series title game, facing off against his former mentor, Skip Bertman and LSU.
Wells’ impact on the Northwestern State program has been enduring. Before his arrival, the team’s win-loss record was a dismal 43.2%. In the 32 years since he left for Alabama, the Demons have maintained a winning percentage of 55.1% a testament to the strong foundation he built.
