Local residents unite to bring back Bowmanville's Ribfest after its cancellation.

Ribfest’s unexpected cancellation

In a surprising turn of events, one of Ontario’s most cherished summer food festivals, Ribfest, has been officially canceled for 2025 in Bowmanville. The Rotary Club of Bowmanville made this announcement in early February, revealing that the cancellation is due to the construction of a new recreation center in the area.

The long-standing venue at Clarington Fields, which has hosted the festival for years, will be unavailable during this period.

Community response and future plans

Despite the disappointment, local organizers and municipal officials are not giving up. They are actively exploring options to find a new venue that can accommodate the festival.

Steve Kay, co-chair of the Ribs and Brews Committee, expressed his heartbreak over the cancellation, stating, “The second weekend of June is going to be strange in 2025.” The community is rallying together, showcasing their dedication to bringing Ribfest back, with hopes set on a potential return in 2026.

Impact of the recreation center

The new South Bowmanville Recreation Centre, set to open in the summer of 2026, promises to enhance the community with a fully accessible gymnasium, multi-sport dome, and various recreational facilities. While this development is exciting for the future, it poses a challenge for the immediate revival of Ribfest.

Clarington Councillor Lloyd Rang has confirmed that efforts are underway to identify alternative locations that could host not only Ribfest but also other major outdoor events.

Looking ahead with optimism

Since its inception in 2008, Ribfest has raised over $1.5 million for local programs, making it a significant event for the community.

The Rotary Club remains hopeful that Ribfest will find a new home and continue its legacy. As they work tirelessly behind the scenes, the community’s support and enthusiasm for the festival remain strong. The focus is now on collaboration and innovation to ensure that this beloved event can return, bringing joy and delicious food back to Bowmanville.
