Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro had to be admitted Wednesday morning to the Armed Forces Hospital in Brasilia for an attack of hiccups and abdominal pains and will have to be under medical observation for 48 hours, not necessarily hospitalized, official sources reported.

Bolsonaro will be transferred from Brasilia to Sao Paulo to evaluate whether he should undergo “emergency” surgery for an “intestinal obstruction”.

According to the Minister of Communications, Fabio Faria, the president will now be transferred to a hospital in Sao Paulo, where it will be evaluated whether he will undergo a new abdominal operation.

The Presidency had initially reported that Bolsonaro would undergo tests in Brasilia and would remain “under observation for 24 to 48 hours, not necessarily in the hospital”.

However, it was later ascertained the intestinal obstruction – and the possibility of a new operation – which Minister Faria said may be a consequence of the attack he suffered in 2018, in the middle of the election campaign that brought him to power, when he was stabbed in the abdomen by a person.

In September last year, the 66-year-old president underwent surgery in São Paulo to remove a kidney stone.
