Escaping the city for a rural paradise

In a bold move to escape the hustle and bustle of Austin, Texas, Lexi Newkirk and her husband, Diego, have embarked on an inspiring journey to create their dream home. With a budget of $60,000, they purchased 12.5 acres of land in a serene rural area, just a stone’s throw from their city roots. The couple, both in their mid-twenties, envisioned a unique living space that would reflect their love for unconventional homes. Their choice? Two 40-foot shipping containers, which they acquired for a mere $5,500 each.

Transforming containers into cozy living spaces

Diego, who works in mold removal, has dedicated the past year to transforming these containers into a cozy 640-square-foot home. The design includes one bedroom and a bathroom, with plans to complete the project by March. While living in a renovated RV purchased for $4,000, the couple has been diligently working on their new abode, tackling plumbing, electrical work, and even installing a septic tank. Lexi, who runs a digital marketing agency, expressed her excitement about their new lifestyle, stating, “We love it. It’s like our own little city.”

From dreams of an Airbnb to a personal homestead

Initially, Lexi and Diego had grand plans to develop their land into an “exotic tiny Airbnb ranch,” featuring 15 to 20 unique homes. However, due to permit issues, they pivoted to focus on building a small home for themselves. Their land, affectionately named Livingstone Ranch, is now a canvas for their homesteading dreams. After stacking the containers and laying a solid foundation, they are now on the brink of completing their first home. Lexi shared, “The bedroom wakes up to the sunrise and from the bath, you can see the sunset.” This picturesque setting is just the beginning of their journey.

Future plans and sustainable living

With their container home nearing completion, Lexi and Diego are already looking ahead. They aspire to build a barndominium—a barn conversion—and have begun raising chickens and two cows to enhance their homestead. Lexi emphasized their desire to inspire others, saying, “We want to give people inspiration for different projects you can do.” Their story is a testament to the creativity and determination of young couples seeking to redefine their living spaces while embracing a more sustainable lifestyle.
