What is Ben’s Day?

Ben’s Day is a newly established celebration at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Edmonton, dedicated to the memory of Ben Stelter, a young boy whose love for the Edmonton Oilers and fried chicken brought the community together.

This special day, observed every May 27, aims to honor Ben’s legacy while supporting local children through the Ben Stelter Foundation. The initiative was inspired by Ben’s passion for Popeyes, particularly his favorite meal of spicy chicken, mac and cheese, and cajun fries, which he often requested after hospital visits.

A community united in grief and joy

The idea for Ben’s Day emerged when Ben’s parents, Mike and Lea Stelter, met Kyle Ferbey, a representative of the franchise group that operates Popeyes in Edmonton. Ferbey was deeply moved by Ben’s story and wanted to create a lasting tribute that would resonate with the community.

“To have an opportunity to do something for the community that I know is going to make a big difference in our city is something that I feel so good about,” Ferbey expressed. The net proceeds from participating Popeyes locations will be donated to the Ben Stelter Foundation, which aims to help children facing similar challenges.

Ben’s legacy lives on

Ben Stelter, who passed away from aggressive glioblastoma brain cancer in August 2022, was more than just a fan; he was a symbol of hope and resilience for many. His dream of meeting his idol, Oilers captain Connor McDavid, came true when he skated onto the ice wearing his Oilers jersey.

The team embraced Ben, and his infectious spirit inspired the players and fans alike. The tradition of playing the song “La Bamba” after every Oilers win at Rogers Place serves as a reminder of Ben’s vibrant personality and the love he received from the community.

Join the celebration

As May 27 approaches, the Edmonton community is encouraged to participate in Ben’s Day by visiting Popeyes and enjoying the meals that Ben loved. The day is not just about fried chicken; it’s about coming together to celebrate a young boy who touched the hearts of many. Mike Stelter reflected on the overwhelming support from the community, stating, “The way they rallied around Ben, our family, and the foundation is incredible.” This celebration is a testament to the power of community and the lasting impact one child can have.
