Following the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday, celebrities took to social media to show their support.
The 7.2 magnitude earthquake shook several cities in Haiti leaving more than 1,400 dead and thousands injured. With homes and hospitals destroyed, there is an urgent need for supplies and humanitarian aid.
Celebrities share their support for Haiti in the wake of tragic earthquake
When a similar earthquake struck the island 11 years ago, support also came from dozens of celebrities who led charity drives and relief efforts.
Over the weekend, celebrities like Cardi B highlighted the resilience of the Haitian community.
“I have a soft spot for Haiti and its people. They are my cousins,” she tweeted on August 14. “I pray for Haiti who has suffered so much. God, please cover that land and its people.”
Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean also posted a video to Instagram encouraging his followers to support the people of Haiti. “Let’s keep doing our part for Haiti,” the rapper said in the caption of the post.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka, whose father is Haitian, pledged to donate prize money from the upcoming Western and Southern Open she will play. In the Aug. 14 tweet, Osaka wrote: “It really hurts to see all the devastation happening in Haiti and I feel like we can’t catch a break.”
Reality TV star Bethenny Frankel shared on Twitter that she secured 1.4 million in medical supplies, food and other relief kits through her BStrong initiative in partnership with Global Empowerment Mission.
“We will be working on rescue, recovery and rebuilding throughout September,” she wrote in a subsequent tweet.
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II shared her condolences in a statement shared on the Royal Family’s official Twitter account on Monday.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and destruction caused by the earthquake in Haiti,” the statement read.
