The Central Okanagan Food Bank has kicked off its annual Christmas hamper distribution campaign, aiming to provide essential support to families in need during the holiday season. This year, the organization, alongside its dedicated volunteers, is preparing to distribute an unprecedented number of hampers, reflecting a significant rise in demand.
Rising demand for food assistance
According to Trevor Moss, the executive director of the food bank, the need for assistance has surged by a staggering 30% compared to last year. “People are hurting, they are desperate, and they need the food bank,” Moss stated, emphasizing the sobering reality faced by many families in the community. This holiday season, the food bank is set to support approximately 4,500 families, translating to around 12,000 individuals relying on their services.
Changing demographics of food bank users
Interestingly, the fastest-growing demographic among food bank users in recent months has been working families, particularly those with two children. Moss noted, “The fastest growing population that’s coming to the food bank in the last six months is two individuals with two children, and they are working families.” This shift highlights the increasing financial pressures faced by many households, making it crucial for the community to rally together in support.
Community involvement and support
To raise awareness and encourage community involvement, the food bank hosted an open house event, inviting media and local dignitaries, including Kelowna’s mayor, Tom Dyas. The mayor underscored the importance of community support during the holiday season, stating, “We all know that the need increases around Christmas time, so to bring awareness, just to be here, to support the Central Okanagan Food Bank, and also to bring awareness to the communities.”
The food bank is currently appealing for donations, particularly turkeys and hams, as well as monetary contributions. An anonymous donor has pledged to match monetary donations up to $125,000 this month, amplifying the impact of community generosity. Moss expressed gratitude to the community, stating, “What I want us to tell everyone in the community is you are making a huge impact. You’re touching children, seniors’ lives, and we just want to say thank you.”
