Chicago Calls for Gun Violence Prevention Department Following Deadly Weekend

After a violent Juneteenth weekend in Chicago, faith leaders and officials are pushing for a new department to tackle gun violence, sparking political debates.

Chicago Calls for Gun Violence Prevention Department Following Deadly Weekend

The city of Chicago is grappling with the aftermath of a violent Juneteenth weekend that left six people dead and 33 others injured. In response, faith leaders and community activists are rallying for the creation of a dedicated Department of Gun Violence Prevention. This push comes amidst a heated exchange between local leaders and former President Donald Trump, who has suggested federal intervention to address the city’s crime woes.

The weekend’s violence included a mass shooting at a Juneteenth gathering on the Far South Side, where 12 people were injured. This incident, along with other shootings across the city, has highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated approach to reducing gun violence. Community leaders argue that a permanent department would ensure that violence prevention efforts remain a priority, regardless of changes in political leadership.

Community Leaders Unite for a New Department

On Monday, a coalition of faith leaders, community activists, and city officials gathered outside City Hall to advocate for the establishment of a Department of Gun Violence Prevention. This proposed department would focus exclusively on reducing gun violence and coordinating existing violence prevention programs, public safety initiatives, healthcare resources, and social service organizations.

Rev. Ciera Bates Chamberlain of Live Free Illinois emphasized the need for a long-term, coordinated approach. “We have long believed that reducing gun violence cannot be dependent on who occupies City Hall or what administration is in office,” she stated. Similarly, Rev. Beth Brown of Lincoln Park Presbyterian Church described gun violence as a public health crisis that requires sustained investment and commitment.

Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church was particularly vocal, criticizing the widespread availability of guns. “We have too damn many guns in Chicago and in this country. We got to deal with the gun issue. It’s the first line of offense for everything now,” he asserted. Pfleger also called on Trump to restore funding for gun violence prevention programs that had been cut.

Political Tensions and Federal Intervention

The violent weekend sparked a response from former President Donald Trump, who took to social media to comment on Chicago’s crime issues. “Lots of Killing going on in Chicago. 22 people shot, at least 4 Dead,” Trump posted. “Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!!”

Trump’s comments drew sharp criticism from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who expressed support for the proposed department. “What should have been a night of celebration and community reflection for Juneteenth was shattered by a horrific act of violence,” Johnson stated. He emphasized the need for investments in community-level crime prevention programs rather than federal intervention.

The White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson defended Trump’s approach, highlighting his success in reducing violent crime in other cities. “President Trump’s bold actions in cities like D.C. and Memphis have dramatically reduced violent crime – local Democrat leaders in Chicago should see the President’s incredible results and be begging him to do the same in Chicago,” Jackson said.

The Role of Violence Interrupters

Tio Hardiman, founder of Violence Interrupters, stressed the importance of including organizations already working in affected neighborhoods in any new city-led effort. “Right now we need more boots on the ground so we can intercept whisperers and stop guys from killing people on the front end,” Hardiman stated. He argued that real-world experience is critical when trying to prevent violence before it happens.

Hardiman’s organization has reportedly prevented 40 potentially fatal incidents involving guns and other weapons this year across Chicago. He emphasized the need for a more hands-on approach to violence prevention, stating, “When you’re out here in the belly of the beast on the streets and you have never been threatened, you never been confronted, nobody’s ever shot guns around you, someone’s not telling the truth, you won’t be able to stop no killing in the face of the guys who are pulling them triggers.”

As Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, the push for a dedicated department to address this issue gains momentum. The debate over federal intervention versus community-led solutions remains at the forefront, with both sides advocating for what they believe to be the most effective approach to ensuring the safety of Chicago’s residents.
