Unexpected call for help
This Memorial Day weekend, while many were enjoying the festivities of Fleet Week in Manhattan, the U.S. Coast Guard was called into action for a real-life rescue mission. Members of the Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, affectionately known as the ‘Blackjacks,’ were diverted from a planned demonstration to respond to a distress signal approximately 20 miles off the Jersey shore. The call, which included a transmission that sounded like ‘Help,’ prompted immediate action from the Coast Guard, showcasing their unwavering commitment to safety and rescue operations.
According to a Coast Guard representative, any indication of potential distress is sufficient to launch a search and rescue operation. Despite the absence of any corroborating evidence, such as a missing person or boat, the team prioritized the call, demonstrating their readiness to act in any situation. The search operation, which spanned the areas of Barnegat Light, Atlantic City, and Cape May, was ultimately called off after several hours, with no reports of missing persons or severe injuries.

One Coast Guard member noted that there is often more than a 50% chance of being diverted during this busy holiday period. Throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, several individuals were rescued from the water over the weekend, but thankfully, there were no reports of fatalities or serious injuries. The Coast Guard’s proactive approach to these situations is essential, as they are often the first line of defense for those in distress on the water.
