Community rallies for youth recovery amid drug crisis

Annual parade raises funds for a much-needed youth treatment center in Kelowna.

Communities unite to support youth in overcoming drug challenges.

In the heart of Kelowna, a community is coming together to address the devastating impact of the toxic drug crisis. Pam Turgeon, a local resident who has faced unimaginable loss, is leading the charge with her initiative, the ‘Parade With A Purpose.’ This annual event not only honors her late son Ryan and son-in-law Cody but also aims to raise crucial funds for a youth treatment and recovery center.

Turning grief into action

Turgeon’s journey through grief has transformed into a powerful mission. “It is a grief you never get over,” she reflects, yet she channels that pain into positive action. Over the past five years, the parade has successfully raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, with a goal of reaching $250,000 this year. An anonymous donor has pledged to match this amount, amplifying the potential impact of the funds raised.

A critical need for youth support

The proposed youth treatment center, spearheaded by Bridge Youth and Family Services, is a response to the urgent need for accessible resources in the community. Kelly Paley, the organization’s director of community engagement, emphasizes the importance of early intervention. “I think this is a critical project because everyone deserves access to treatment and recovery,” she states. The center aims to provide a live-in treatment program for up to 40 young people, offering counseling and medical support in a safe environment.

Positive signs amid ongoing challenges

Recent statistics from the BC Coroners Service indicate a slight decline in overdose deaths, with 1,925 reported so far this year. While this is a step in the right direction, community leaders like Paley stress that comprehensive treatment options are essential to further reduce these numbers. The $8-million project is nearing its fundraising goal, with plans for groundbreaking expected in the spring of 2024 and operations to commence by 2026.

Join the movement

The upcoming parade, scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m., will take place downtown, enhancing its visibility and outreach. Volunteers will be on hand to facilitate donations, making it easier for community members to contribute to this vital cause. As Turgeon leads the charge, she carries the memory of her loved ones with her, believing they are watching over the efforts to create a brighter future for the youth of Kelowna.
