Gathering for a cause

The fifth annual community suhur took place at the Rajveer Banquet Hall in northeast Calgary, bringing together thousands to celebrate the spirit of Ramadan. This year, host Shaukat Hayat emphasized the importance of giving back, stating, “You are in a very high spirit during this month.” The event aims to collect an impressive 10,000 pounds of food for the Calgary Food Bank, showcasing the community’s commitment to supporting those in need.

Food and festivities

As the sun set, attendees gathered for the suhur, which began around 9 p.m. and continued until 6 a.m. the following morning. Hayat anticipated over 7,000 participants, all eager to enjoy a diverse array of local cuisine. “It’s, technically speaking, a food-tasting festival,” he explained. Local restaurants showcased their best dishes, offering free samples to the public. This not only highlights the culinary talents within the community but also fosters a sense of togetherness and celebration.

Goals and aspirations

In addition to the food collection, organizers are also aiming for cash donations of $5,000. With approximately 2,500 to 3,000 pounds of food already collected, the community is well on its way to reaching its goal. Hayat expressed optimism about the event’s success, stating, “We have got about 2,500 to 3,000 pounds of food already collected.” The suhur serves as a reminder of the power of community engagement and the impact of collective efforts during Ramadan.
