Ryan Coogler’s Sinners sweeps the season, landing 16 Oscar nominations and an ensemble trophy
Ryan Coogler’s period vampire drama Sinners has become the awards season story everyone’s talking about. The film leads this year’s Oscar race with 16 nominations and picked up the top ensemble prize at the 32nd Actor Awards — cementing its momentum across critics’ circles and industry ceremonies.
A historic ensemble win for Coogler Coogler’s Actor Awards victory is notable: he’s now the first director in that event’s history to guide two different casts to a best-ensemble win, following Black Panther’s success in 2018. The Sinners ensemble — featuring Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Omar Miller and blues legend Buddy Guy — prevailed over tough competition, including ensembles from Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and One Battle After Another.
Michael B. Jordan’s awards run Michael B. Jordan has been a central figure in Sinners’ awards season. He won a best-actor prize at the Actor Awards and was named Entertainer of the Year at the 57th NAACP Image Awards, where Sinners also took home best motion picture. At the NAACP ceremony the film’s celebration of blues music and Black cultural history was highlighted, and the evening provided platforms for conversations about inclusion, legacy and industry accountability.
NAACP highlights and moments of reflection The NAACP Image Awards combined celebration with reflection. Salt-N-Pepa were inducted into the NAACP Hall of Fame, Viola Davis received the Chairman’s Award and gave an introspective address, and Colman Domingo accepted the President’s Award. Host Deon Cole steered an evening that mixed tribute and purpose. Ryan Coogler and Delroy Lindo used their moments onstage to respond to a recent BAFTA incident, reframing the conversation toward solidarity.
Diane Warren’s longshot song campaign Songwriter Diane Warren is mounting what observers call a longshot Oscar bid for original song. Her entry, “Dear Me,” a personal composition performed by Kesha for the documentary Diane Warren: Relentless, has added another thread to the film’s awards narrative. Warren — a 17-time Academy Award nominee in the original-song category who received an Academy honorary award in — framed this nomination as recognition from peers. Other songs in contention include “I Lied to You” from Sinners, “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters and “Sweet Dreams of Joy” from Viva Verdi!
A look ahead to the Oscars Final Academy voting runs Thursday, Feb. 26 through Thursday, March 5, and the 98th Academy Awards will air on ABC on March 15, hosted by Conan O’Brien. Historically, there’s been overlap between Actor Awards ensemble winners and the Oscar best picture — the Actor Awards winner has matched the Academy’s top film in eight of the last 16 years since the best-picture slate was expanded. Whether Sinners converts its season warmth into Oscar statuettes will be decided in the coming weeks.
What’s clear is that Sinners has become a cultural touchstone this season: a film sparking conversation, winning peer recognition and propelling several individual careers into the spotlight. The final act of awards season will show how much of that early momentum holds.
