The Northern Super League (NSL) has unveiled its championship trophy, the Diana B. Matheson Cup, emphasizing the growth of women’s soccer in Canada. This prestigious award will be presented to the winner of the league’s inaugural Final, set for November 15 at Toronto’s BMO Field. The trophy’s introduction marks a significant milestone in the advancement of women’s professional soccer in the country.

The cup is named after Diana Matheson, a prominent former midfielder for the Canadian national team and a vital figure in the establishment of the NSL. Throughout her career, Matheson showcased remarkable talent while advocating for the development of women’s soccer in Canada.

Honoring a trailblazer

In a statement, Matheson expressed her gratitude, saying, “It’s incredibly humbling to see my name on the championship trophy, especially as it is a Cup that represents so much more.” She highlighted that the trophy symbolizes the achievements of all players, past and present, who have contributed to the growth of women’s soccer. Matheson hopes the trophy will embody the excellence and pride of the league.

Unanimously, the NSL board chose to honor Matheson with this tribute. President Christina Litz noted that the trophy signifies not just a championship but a new chapter for women’s sports in Canada. “When the first club raises it next month, it will stand as proof that women’s professional soccer in Canada deserves this professional stage for generations to come,” she added.

A trophy with history

Measuring just under 56 centimeters, the trophy features a bronze base layered with a golden body, reflecting Canada’s achievements in women’s soccer, particularly after their Olympic gold victory at the Tokyo Games. The design includes the North Star emblem, integral to the NSL’s logo, reinforcing the league’s identity.

Matheson, who currently serves as the NSL’s chief growth officer, had an impressive international career, scoring 19 goals in 206 matches for the Canadian senior women’s team over 17 years. Her contributions extend beyond her playing days, as she has been instrumental in advocating for women’s soccer at all levels.

Global recognition

On the same day as the trophy unveiling, Matheson received global recognition by winning the World Football Summit Award for the best women’s football initiative. This accolade highlights her influence and the momentum building around women’s soccer.

Fans can see the Diana B. Matheson Cup in person during The Pitch national screening tour, featuring a documentary that chronicles Matheson’s journey in launching Canada’s first women’s professional soccer league. The tour kicks off in October, with events planned in cities including Vancouver and Montreal, culminating in a final showcase in Toronto on November 12.

Watch the Final live

The highly anticipated NSL Final will be broadcast nationwide on platforms including CBC, TSN, and RDS, with international streaming available on ESPN+ and the league’s official YouTube channel. Fans can tune in to witness history as the first-ever champion of the NSL is crowned.

The unveiling of the Diana B. Matheson Cup not only honors a remarkable athlete but also symbolizes a promising future for women’s soccer in Canada. This trophy serves as a reminder of the dedication and passion invested in creating a professional platform for female athletes in the sport.
