Despite Nicki Minaj’s claims that a family friend was rendered impotent by the COVID-19 vaccine, a public health expert has said it is not a side effect of the shot.

On Monday, Minaj revealed that she will not be attending the Met Gala because she is not vaccinated, a requirement for this year’s event.

“They want you to get vaccinated for the Met,” she tweeted. “If I do get vaccinated, it won’t be for the Met. It will be once I feel I’ve done enough research. I’m working on that now. In the meantime, my loves, be safe. Wear the mask with two strings that grabs your head and face. Not that loose one.”

He followed up the tweet by sharing a story about a family friend who, he said, “became impotent” after getting vaccinated.

“My cousin in Trinidad doesn’t vaccinate because his friend got vaccinated and became impotent. His testicles swelled up,” he wrote.

According to public health expert Dr. Leana Wen, impotence is not a known side effect of any of the COVID-19 vaccines currently licensed by the Food and Drug Administration.

“It is simply not true that receiving the COVID-19 vaccine is associated with infertility in men or women,” says Dr. Wen, an emergency physician and professor of public health at George Washington University.

Dr. Wen also points out the risks associated with influential figures spreading misinformation about the potential side effects of COVID-19, rather than relying on scientific evidence.

Minaj faced backlash following her tweets, including from MSNBC national correspondent Joy Reid, who said on air that “as a fan, I’m very saddened that you did that.”

Minaj responded to Reid’s comments on Twitter, saying she was spreading “a false narrative about a black woman.”
