A family of three-a mother, father and teenage son-tragically died in an early morning fire that devoured their home, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m., June 21, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, about 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia, when a fire engulfed the family’s home and a neighbor who noticed the blaze was able to alert a police officer who happened to be in the vicinity of the scene at the time.

“From the window of our house I could see some flames coming out of there, but there was a lot of smoke. There was a lot of smoke,” neighbor Christopher Azukas told WPVI in an interview after the incident.

Azukas told Wpvi that it was his daughter, who first noticed the fire and alarmed authorities.

“She ran outside, called him and told him there was a fire in that house over there,” he said.

Firefighters soon arrived on the scene and tried to save the family in the burning house, but were unsuccessful. However, authorities were able to save the inhabitants of the house, who lived in the attached house where the fire started.

“The teenager was really into baseball, so sometimes I’d see him in the backyard, practicing baseball and stuff like that,” Azukas told WPVI. “I’d see him and his dad going to games on the weekends and all that, but that was it.”

An investigation into the fire’s entry is being prepared, and while it is currently unclear what sparked the blaze, officials told WPVI, they have an idea of how the fire started, but it is not ready to release at this time.
