The explosion of a fuel tanker has left at least 60 people dead in Haiti.

The accident took place in Cap-Haitien, Haiti’s second largest city. The explosion of the tank occurred at the moment when a hundred people were looting a tanker after it suffered an accident.

Hospitals are overwhelmed

The high number of injured has overwhelmed the city’s hospitals and health workers are calling for urgent help to treat them all. The death toll, 60 for the moment, as well as the number of injured could rise in the coming hours.

In view of what has happened, the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, has decreed three days of official mourning throughout the country.

During this year, Haiti has had to face severe gasoline supply problems due to the action of armed gangs. Fuel prices have skyrocketed, making it a luxury commodity, almost impossible for Haitian citizens to afford.
