Facebook has taken the decision to suspend Trump for 2 years

Facebook announced Friday that the suspension of Donald Trump’s account will remain in place for two years from the initial suspension on January 7.

“In light of the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr. Trump’s suspension, we believe his actions constituted a serious violation of our rules, which amount to the highest sanction among the new enforcement protocols,” Nick Clegg, Facebook’s vice president of global affairs, said in a statement released Friday.

Trump was originally suspended from Facebook in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill siege on grounds that his posts incited violence.

Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a post saying, “the risks of allowing the president to continue using our service during this period are simply too great.”

After a review, Facebook’s Oversight Board announced in early May that Trump remains anchored, but that it was “not appropriate” to “impose the indefinite and standardized punishment of indefinite suspension.”

It was in response to this call that Facebook made the decision to uphold the suspension for a set period of two years.

Trump’s account is not automatically reused after the 2-year period ends. Rather, Facebook said, it will “seek experts To assess whether the risk to public safety has been reduced.”

This will include assessing “instances of violence, restrictions on peaceful assembly, and other indicators of civil unrest,” and if the company believes it still perceives the account to be a risk, it will extend the suspension
