In a heart-wrenching incident that has captured the attention of the Calgary community, a family is frantically searching for their beloved dog, Bean, who went missing after a utility worker accidentally let her out of their backyard. The incident occurred on a chilly Thursday morning when Joe Jesseau and Briana Jaroslawsky, residents of northeast Calgary, faced the unthinkable as their seven-year-old Papillion Shepherd-cross slipped away.

The moment of panic

It all began around 9 a.m. when Jaroslawsky let Bean outside for a brief moment. At the same time, an Enmax employee entered their yard to check the utility meter. “I was making a coffee, saw her out in the backyard and then I heard a bang on the front window,” Jaroslawsky recounted. The utility worker, who inadvertently opened the gate, informed her, “I let your dog out, sorry.” Despite his initial offer to help, he left the scene, leaving the family in a state of panic.

Community support and relentless searching

Since Bean’s disappearance, the couple has mobilized the community in their search efforts. They have put up posters, organized search teams, and even distributed business cards to passersby, hoping to gather any information about their missing pet. “We’ve spent hours in the dark searching the streets and parks; going on little to no sleep over the past three days,” Jesseau shared, emphasizing the emotional toll this ordeal has taken on them.

The emotional toll of losing a pet

As temperatures plummet well below freezing, the couple’s anxiety grows. They fear for Bean’s safety and well-being, especially considering the loss of two other dogs in the past year due to health issues. “She’s my kid,” Jesseau expressed, his voice trembling with emotion. “I don’t have kids at home, so I treat my dog like most parents do their kids. I’d do anything for her.” This sentiment resonates deeply with pet owners everywhere, highlighting the profound bond between humans and their furry companions.

As the search continues, the family remains hopeful that Bean will return home safely. Their story serves as a reminder of the importance of community support during difficult times and the love that pets bring into our lives. The couple urges anyone with information to come forward, as they cling to the hope of reuniting with their beloved dog.
