Final Call: A Gripping Real-Time Thriller Based on True Events

Excitement builds for Last Call at European Film Market

The international film industry is abuzz as Picture Tree International confirms its involvement in the sales of the highly anticipated film Last Call. This real-time hostage thriller, produced by Tanweer Productions, is inspired by actual events. It is set to premiere at the upcoming European Film Market, featuring exclusive screenings for potential buyers.

Directed by Sherif Francis, who has Greek and Egyptian roots, Last Call unfolds during the dramatic New Year’s Eve of 1999 in Athens. The plot centers around a desperate fugitive wielding a live grenade, who takes a family hostage while demanding to broadcast his demands live as the world counts down to the new millennium. This real-time broadcast draws in a young journalist, several media executives, and a conflicted police force, all of whom are helplessly caught in a situation that spirals toward an irreversible tragedy.

Thematic exploration in a modern context

The film explores the intricate relationship between media influence, power dynamics, and institutional failures. Francis states that the narrative encourages viewers to contemplate these themes, which extend beyond the film’s Greek roots. “With Last Call, I aimed to evoke the same sense of immediacy and unpredictability I experienced as a child witnessing real events unfold,” Francis said, highlighting the film’s dedication to providing an authentic emotional experience.

A strong collaborative effort

In developing the screenplay, Francis worked closely with acclaimed Greek screenwriter Katerina Bei. Their collaboration has resulted in a narrative that not only engages but also prompts examination of the societal implications of media coverage during crises.
