First Ray Films unveils exciting plans for next decade

As First Ray Films celebrates its 10th anniversary, the Mumbai-based independent production company has unveiled a dynamic six-film slate. This initiative aims to captivate audiences and showcase the diverse storytelling capabilities of its creative team. Founded by actor-producer-director Anshuman Jha, the company has established itself through a variety of genre films that explore contemporary societal themes while pushing the boundaries of traditional filmmaking.

Celebrating a Decade of Creativity

First Ray Films has made a mark with notable productions such as the social media thriller Mona_Darling (2016), the LGBTQ+ road trip film Hum Bhi Akele, Tum Bhi Akele (2020), and the recent action-packed Lakadbaggha (2023).

Each film reflects the company’s commitment to storytelling that resonates with audiences, presenting narratives that are both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Looking ahead, the company has scheduled three theatrical releases over the next six months. This lineup begins with Jha’s directorial debut, the black comedy thriller Lord Curzon Ki Haveli.

Following this is Harish Vyas’s Hari Ka Om and the much-anticipated sequel Lakadbaggha 2, which has already completed production. This slate promises to deliver fresh perspectives and innovative plots, continuing the company’s legacy of creative storytelling.

New Projects on the Horizon

In addition to the upcoming releases, First Ray Films is set to embark on three new projects in 2026. This expansion signals the company’s ambition to collaborate with both seasoned and emerging directors. Among these projects is an untitled noir-thriller set in Mumbai at the turn of the millennium, focusing on the intriguing lives of twins.

This film will be helmed by an award-winning filmmaker known for their innovative style.

Another project, Bajrangi, directed by Parth Saurabh, promises to delve into themes of service and tradition within the context of contemporary India, set against the backdrop of Bihar.

Furthermore, Ovi & The Monk, a poignant debut feature by Jasraj Padhaye, tells the heartwarming story of a boy journeying across the Himalayas to reunite a dog with its owner after his father’s passing during the pandemic. This narrative exemplifies the resilience of the human spirit and the connections we share with our loved ones.

Vision for the Future

Reflecting on the company’s journey, Anshuman Jha stated, “I have always believed that films don’t fail, budgets fail.” This perspective underscores the importance of audience engagement and the value of telling fresh, disruptive stories that resonate. Jha expressed immense gratitude to the investors whose support has sustained the company through its first decade, affirming that films can indeed create a cultural impact while being financially viable.

Jha’s vision extends beyond just filmmaking. He aims to cultivate an ecosystem that thrives on authenticity and collaboration, integrating talents from across the globe to create cinema that endures. “We aren’t just creating projects; we are crafting honest cinema that we hope will stand the test of time,” he emphasized. With a bold, disruptive approach, First Ray Films is poised to leave an indelible mark on the landscape of independent cinema, promising to deliver unforgettable stories that challenge conventions and inspire audiences.
