During a virtual meeting of the “coalition of the willing,” leaders from several countries convened to reaffirm their commitment to aiding Ukraine in these crucial discussions.

French President Emmanuel Macron took a pivotal step by unveiling a new joint task force, which will be spearheaded by France and the United Kingdom with participation from the United States and Turkey. This initiative aims to detail the military backing that Europe will extend to Ukraine following a potential peace accord.

Formation of a multinational task force

Macron expressed optimism about finalizing the contributions of each nation, stating that clear security guarantees would soon be articulated. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of a multinational military force, highlighting its critical role in safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty during the call, which notably included U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

New cohesion in transatlantic security talks

An official from the Elysée Palace remarked that this new task force would inject much-needed coherence into transatlantic discussions concerning Ukraine’s security. Meanwhile, a UK official pointed out that Rubio’s engagement in the conversation signified a positive shift in U.S. support, which had previously been a contentious issue.

Preparations for this coalition are reportedly well underway, with military planners in the UK making significant progress. However, experts caution against overconfidence. Ed Arnold from the Royal United Services Institute in London warned that without solid U.S. commitments, the coalition could find itself in a precarious situation, deploying forces with unreliable backing.

The coalition, which consists of various nations including France, Germany, Britain, Belgium, Canada, and Turkey, was established earlier in response to concerns about the U.S.’s ongoing support for Ukraine. Members have pledged different levels of assistance, with both France and the UK promising to deploy troops on the ground to help enforce any peace agreement and deter further aggression from Russia.

Military presence and strategic operations

Among the proposals is a reassurance force that would provide air and naval support to Ukraine while also focusing on revitalizing the nation’s military capabilities. Starmer’s spokesperson affirmed that the UK remains open to stationing troops in Ukraine to secure a peace deal, while Macron suggested that a military presence could be established in safe zones within Kyiv or Odessa.

Despite these developments, Macron urged caution, emphasizing that the military presence would not be on the front lines. Instead, operations would be conducted from neighboring countries, ensuring that Ukrainian airspace is adequately protected without provoking unnecessary alarm among the French populace.

Germany’s position has been more reserved, with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul highlighting the existing German brigade in Lithuania as evidence of their commitment to regional security. He asserted that Germany’s involvement is significant and adequate compared to other NATO members.
