Fremantle, a prominent global producer and distributor, has made notable progress in expanding its footprint in Asia through a series of scripted series sales. Among the highlights is the highly anticipated action-adventure show Sandokan: The Pirate Prince, adapted from Emilio Salgari’s classic novels. This series aims to engage viewers with its exciting storyline and an impressive cast.
Key acquisitions across the region
The series Sandokan, produced by Lux Vide, showcases renowned actors such as Can Yaman, Alanah Bloor, Ed Westwick, and John Hannah. This adaptation has been acquired by Rewind’s Hits Now for pan-regional Asia, as well as Hulu in Japan and LG U+ in South Korea, representing a significant achievement for the production company.
Additional titles in the lineup
Fremantle’s offerings extend beyond Sandokan. Another significant title, Hotel Costiera, is a fast-paced drama directed by Emmy winner Adam Bernstein, featuring Jesse Williams. This gripping series centers on a former Marine who investigates a complex missing-person case set against the picturesque backdrop of the Amalfi Coast. Like Sandokan, it will be accessible on Hits Now for pan-regional Asia, Star Entertainment in India, and LG U+ in South Korea.
Thrillers and romantic comedies join the fray
Fremantle’s diverse portfolio features the Sky Original thriller The Iris Affair, created by Neil Cross and starring Niamh Algar and Tom Hollander. This gripping series is set to premiere on BBC First and BBC Player across pan-regional Asia, as well as on Wowow in Japan. The combination of genres highlights Fremantle’s dedication to offering a wide range of engaging content for Asian audiences.
New titles for Hong Kong viewers
Now TV Limited has secured multiple titles from Fremantle, enhancing its offerings for audiences in Hong Kong. The lineup includes the psychological thriller Little Disasters, featuring Diane Kruger, and the romantic comedy-drama Film Club, co-created by and starring Aimee Lou Wood and Ralph Davis. Additional highlights include The Rumour, with Rachel Shenton, as well as the second seasons of Daddy Issues and Big Mood, showcasing talents such as David Morrissey, Nicola Coughlan, and Lydia West.
Catalog expansions in South Korea
Fremantle has made significant strides in South Korea, as LG U+ has acquired an extensive collection of over 70 hours of dramas. This acquisition includes both newly released titles and classic catalog offerings. Among the notable selections are the thrilling No Man’s Land and the adventure drama The Luminaries, featuring Eva Green. Additionally, the acclaimed series The Young Pope and The New Pope, starring Jude Law, will also be included in this expansive package.
The announcement of recent deals occurred during the Asia TV Forum and Market in Singapore, where industry professionals convened to explore the future of television in the region. Haryaty Rahman, executive vice president of distribution Asia at Fremantle, highlighted the strong response to their scripted slate. She noted, “The appetite for authentic storytelling has never been stronger, and our partners across the region are really connecting with our bold new dramas and iconic catalogue titles.”
These sales follow the successful release of the final season of My Brilliant Friend: The Story of the Lost Child. This series, along with its complete box set, is now accessible on China’s leading platforms, including iQIYI, Tencent Video, Youku, and Bilibili. This represents a significant milestone as it marks the first occasion a non-English language European drama series has premiered simultaneously on all four platforms in China.
Fremantle’s expansion in Asia signals a promising future for scripted series that appeal to audiences eager for engaging narratives and diverse storytelling.
