The result is a poignant narrative about a Jewish family and a Chinese family who become neighbors in Shanghai during a tumultuous time in history. This fictional story is rooted in the real experiences of Jews fleeing the Holocaust, with approximately 20,000 European Jews finding refuge in Shanghai.
“It was a part of history that neither of us knew anything about,” Ohayon shared, highlighting the importance of storytelling in understanding our past. The musical not only entertains but also educates audiences about a lesser-known chapter of history, making it particularly relevant in today’s climate of rising anti-immigrant sentiments and racism.
Art as a response to societal issues
In an era where discussions around racism and safety are more critical than ever, Ohayon believes that The Garden Bridge serves as a timely reminder of the struggles faced by marginalized communities. She pointed out the alarming rise in hate crimes, including an attack on a synagogue connected to her childhood school.
“Just every form of racism, of hatred, of lack of safety, lack of security in the most basic sense, has come about,” she remarked, emphasizing the need for art that reflects and challenges societal issues.
Her parents, who have supported her journey from the beginning, are proud of her accomplishments. Ohayon’s father, Robert, noted that her love for music and performing was evident from a young age. “I was too chicken,” he laughed, reflecting on his own unpursued dreams of acting. However, he finds solace in knowing that his daughter has a solid legal background to fall back on, should her theatrical aspirations not pan out.
