G7 Leaders Strengthen Ukraine Support and Address Iran Conflict

The G7 summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, marked a pivotal moment in global diplomacy. French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the event as a success, highlighting key developments on Ukraine and Iran. As the Russia-Ukraine war entered its fifth year, world leaders gathered to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses and address the recent U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement.

The summit, attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump, focused on bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses and ensuring its energy supply. Leaders also agreed to intensify international economic pressure on Moscow, following a barrage of Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s biggest cities that killed 11 people.

Ukraine Takes Center Stage

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined G7 leaders for a morning working session that lasted 75 minutes. A French diplomat familiar with the talks described the conversation on Ukraine as “very fruitful.” G7 leaders, including Trump, agreed to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions targeting its oil and natural gas sectors.

As the U.S. under Trump has reduced aid to Ukraine, France and its European allies have become the primary providers of military and financial support to Kyiv. The U.K. announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s “shadow fleet,” which is used to ship oil and gas, and the finance networks Moscow uses to evade Western sanctions.

Trump’s Shift in Focus

Following the announcement of a U.S.-Iran ceasefire deal, Trump expressed his intention to shift focus back to Ukraine. “Iran will soon be back in the rearview mirror,” Trump stated, downplaying the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the U.S. but lamenting the death toll. “The whole thing is ridiculous,” he said. “So, yeah, I’m going to do whatever I can.”

Trump’s frustration with the lack of movement toward a Ukraine-Russia resolution was evident. Hours before the summit began, Russia launched a barrage of drones and missiles at Ukraine’s biggest cities, killing 11 people and setting fire to a religious landmark. This attack came after Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke separately by phone with Trump on Sunday, the U.S. leader’s 80th birthday.

Middle East Tensions and Future Steps

The U.S.-Iran ceasefire deal was a significant topic at the summit. Trump held one-on-one talks with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and was scheduled to meet with United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Macron extended invitations to these Gulf nations, which are not part of the G7, to participate in the summit at a critical moment for the region.

Trump expressed frustration over Israel’s continued hostilities with the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah in Lebanon. “They should have been able to deal with them faster,” Trump added about Israeli operations to target Hezbollah. “It just goes on forever. And when that happens, it throws a negative light on the big deal. And that’s the deal with Iran.”

G7 leaders also convened a working lunch to discuss the situation in the Middle East, focusing on the path ahead after the U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement. Despite sharp disagreements with Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over the Iran conflict, U.S. allies seek rapid progress to ease the economic impact of rising oil prices caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Macron stated that France and other Western partners are “ready to take action very quickly” to help reopen the strait peacefully. France and the U.K. have championed a mission to restore maritime security in the strait as soon as conditions allow.
