Heatwave Toll: France Reports 1,000 Additional Deaths Since June 24

The recent heatwave that swept across Western Europe has left a devastating toll on France, with preliminary figures revealing around 1,000 excess deaths since June 24. The scorching temperatures, which soared above 40°C in many areas, have particularly affected the elderly, with 85 percent of the casualties being people aged 65 and over.

The Public Health France agency has stressed that these figures are preliminary and likely an underestimate. The agency has highlighted the need for solidarity measures toward isolated or profoundly lonely individuals, especially in highly urbanized areas like Île-de-France which includes Paris and its suburbs.

The Heatwave’s Devastating Impact on France

The heatwave has eased across France this morning, but not before leaving a significant mark. The sharpest increases in deaths were observed among people dying at home, particularly in the Île-de-France region. The heat has put immense pressure on hospitals and first responders, with a surge in emergency callouts.

In response to the crisis, authorities in Paris banned drinking alcohol in public over the weekend to relieve pressure on emergency services. The city’s Pride March scheduled for Saturday, was also postponed. Major attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum have been closing early to mitigate the effects of the heat.

Despite these measures, tragedies have occurred. A man drowned in the Canal Saint-Martin on Friday night, prompting authorities to warn about the dangers of unsupervised swimming. Additionally, Ligue 2 footballer Kenzo Kies died after reportedly drowning in the Rhône River during the heatwave. His club, En Avant Guingamp expressed their deepest condolences and support to his family.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Across Europe

The heatwave has not spared other parts of Europe. Preliminary all-time temperature records were set in GermanyDenmark and the Czech Republic with a new mark for the month of June recorded in Switzerland.

In Germany a new preliminary record of 41.5°C was recorded in Moeckern-Drewitz topping a record set just the day before near Saarbruecken on the French border. The Danish Meteorological Institute reported a 37°C reading north of the city of Aarhus on Saturday, the highest on record since measurements began in 1874.

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute measured a record 40.9°C north of Prague. In the Slovak capital Bratislava authorities recorded the hottest night on record on Friday. The United Kingdom also experienced its hottest June day on record, with the village of Santon Downham in Suffolk hitting 37.3°C.

As the heatwave continues to affect various regions, the importance of preparedness and solidarity cannot be overstated. The tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of the need for effective measures to protect vulnerable populations during extreme weather events.
