Historic Times Square Ball Drops Mark America's Semiquincentennial

The Times Square ball in New York City is set to make history this July 4, 2026 as it descends eight times to commemorate America’s 250th birthday. This unprecedented event, organized by America250 marks the first time the iconic ball will drop on a date other than New Year’s Eve.

The celebration, known as the Giving 4th Broadcast Benefit Show will feature a rolling countdown across all U.S. time zones and inhabited territories, beginning in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands and concluding in American Samoa. This unique event aims to unite Americans nationwide during the semiquincentennial celebration.

The Rolling Countdown: A Nationwide Celebration

The eight ball drops are scheduled to occur at specific times, each marking midnight in different time zones. The celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. ET on July 3, 2026 with the first ball drop signifying midnight in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. The traditional countdown to midnight in New York will take place at 11:59 p.m. ET serving as the centerpiece of the nationwide celebration.

The countdown will continue through the remaining U.S. time zones, with the final ball drop scheduled for 7 a.m. ET on July 4, 2026 marking midnight in American Samoa. This staggered sequence creates a nearly 24-hour, coast-to-coast celebration tied to the country’s 250th anniversary.

The Giving 4th Initiative: A Call to Unity and Charity

The eight ball drops are part of the inaugural Giving 4th Broadcast Benefit Show a live special from One Times Square. This event also launches the Giving 4th initiative, encouraging Americans to support charitable organizations and volunteer in their communities in honor of the country’s 250th birthday.

David Muir anchor of World News Tonight kicked off ABC News’ celebration by climbing up through the Statue of liberty‘s right arm to reach the torch, standing over 300 feet in the air. This rare look from the torch symbolizes the spirit of unity and celebration that the Giving 4th initiative aims to inspire.

Global Celebrations and Local Preparations

From the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France preparations and festivities for the United States’ 250th birthday are underway worldwide. The Eiffel Tower was illuminated in the colors of the U.S. flag to mark the occasion, and the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, Romania displayed the U.S. flag on its facade.

In Washington, D.C. the Capitol Fourth Concert at the U.S. Capitol is set to take place on July 3, 2026 with gates opening at 7 p.m. to accommodate the extreme heat. Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring an ample supply of water, as the heat index is forecast to reach a scorching 113 degrees.

Despite the heat, the spirit of celebration remains undeterred. The Great American State Fair backed by Freedom 250 continues to attract visitors, offering a glimpse into the nation’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The Times Square ball drops, along with the Giving 4th initiative, serve as a reminder of the nation’s shared history and the importance of coming together to celebrate and support one another. As the ball descends eight times across the country, it symbolizes the unity and resilience of the American spirit.
