The incident, which occurred on May 3rd, has left families and friends in mourning, but it has also sparked a powerful wave of support and solidarity among residents.
Memories of joy and laughter
Among those lost was 14-year-old Jerzeigh Swampy, who was known for her vibrant spirit and passion for hockey. Her grandmother, Priscella Swampy, recalls the last moments they shared, filled with plans for crafting a jingle dress.
Instead, Priscella found herself creating a tea dress for Jerzeigh’s wake, a poignant reminder of the love that transcends even the darkest times. “I felt honored to do it,” she expressed, highlighting the deep connection they shared.
The accident occurred when a GMC Acadia collided with the Volkswagen Tiguan carrying Jerzeigh and her friends.
The RCMP is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether alcohol played a role. As the community processes this tragedy, the focus remains on honoring the memories of those lost.
A community united in grief
The loss of Jerzeigh, along with her friends Cowin Twins and Gabe Johnson, has left an indelible mark on Maskwacis.
Cowin, remembered for his humor and love for pranks, had dreams of becoming a dermatologist. His sister, Cherrisa Twins, shared fond memories of his caring nature and ambition, emphasizing how he brought joy to those around him. “There’s not enough words to explain how special and beautiful Cowin was,” she said, reflecting the sentiments of many in the community.
Gabe Johnson, a devoted partner and father, is also mourned deeply. His partner, Cherrita Saddleback, described him as a selfless individual who always wore a smile, no matter the circumstances. “He always had a smile on his face,” she recalled, a testament to his uplifting spirit.
The families are finding solace in each other, united in their grief and the memories of their loved ones.

In the face of such overwhelming sorrow, the community of Maskwacis has rallied together, providing support and comfort to the grieving families. Priscella Swampy emphasized the importance of focusing on the positives amidst the pain, stating, “I have to focus on those positives, although I’m numb.” This sentiment resonates with many, as they come together to honor the spirits of Jerzeigh, Cowin, and Gabe.
The memorial at the crash site, adorned with flowers, serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and the love that remains. As the community navigates this difficult time, the strength of their bonds and the support they offer each other will be crucial in the healing process.
