A nine-year-old girl was attacked, killed and eaten by a crocodile while walking along a riverside path with her sister in the Indonesian province of West Sumatra.

According to local media reconstruction quoting an official from the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency (Asnedi), the sisters were returning home after bathing in the Batang Masang River, Agam district, on Monday morning, January 18, when the younger daughter, Anisa Putri, was snatched by the reptile, said Asnedi, a local search and rescue agency.

Her elder sister, Mila, on seeing the crocodile pounce on her sister immediately jumped into the water and tried her best to free her from the jaws of the reptile. Unfortunately without success.

“The search and rescue team found her body at 5:50 p.m. about 7 kilometers from the site of the attack,” the Asnedi official said.

Unfortunately, similar tragedies, though rare, are not new in Indonesia. Last October, a large crocodile attacked and devoured an 8-year-old girl while she was bathing in a river in Teluk Kayeli district with her friends.

Tragedy unfolded before their eyes.

The remains of the young victim were found after two days of searching. The same river where the event took place is known for the presence of crocodiles but the local people usually use it for bathing and to get water for cooking.
