Rebuilding after disaster
In the wake of last summer’s catastrophic wildfires, the owners of the beloved Patricia Street Deli in Jasper are taking bold steps to rebuild their business. Wendy and Glen Leitch, who have been integral to the Jasper community for over two decades, are now setting their sights on Edmonton.
“Financially, and emotionally, we need to do this,” Wendy expressed, highlighting the urgency behind their decision to reopen. The couple had just celebrated their 20th anniversary when the fires forced them to close their doors on July 22, leaving a significant void in the community.
The impact of the wildfires
The wildfires that swept through Jasper National Park not only displaced thousands but also caused extensive damage, with the Insurance Bureau of Canada estimating losses at a staggering $1.23 billion. This figure underscores the widespread impact of the disaster, affecting not just local businesses but the entire region.
Wendy and Glen, still grappling with insurance challenges, have chosen to pivot their business model by launching a crowdfunding campaign to support their new venture in downtown Edmonton. “We’re inviting the people that love us to become part of the rebuild,” Wendy stated, emphasizing the deli’s connection to the broader community.
A new beginning in Edmonton
Despite the challenges, the Leitchs are excited about their new location, which is set to be five times larger than their previous establishment. They plan to retain the Patricia Street Deli name and are eager to bring back the cherished traditions that made their deli a staple in Jasper.
Glen noted, “We’re going to start with everything we did, and then expand on that.” Their children played a crucial role in preserving the deli’s legacy by saving recipes and photos in the cloud, ensuring that the essence of the deli lives on.
As they prepare for this new chapter, the couple reflects on the emotional journey they’ve undertaken, acknowledging the grief that still lingers from the fires.
Community connection remains strong
Even though the deli will be over 350 kilometers away from its original location, Glen believes that the Patricia Street Deli will continue to resonate with its loyal customers. “Before you even make a sandwich, it’s how you’re treated,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of customer relationships. The Leitchs are committed to fostering that connection, even as they navigate this significant transition. While they have no immediate plans to return to Jasper, they remain hopeful about the future and the possibility of reestablishing a presence in their hometown. As they embark on this new adventure, Wendy and Glen are determined to honor the legacy of the Patricia Street Deli while embracing the opportunities that lie ahead.
