The University of Wisconsin–Madison is seeking a dedicated individual to join its Wisconsin Athletics, Building and Grounds Playing Surfaces team. Operating under the guidance of the Head Ice Technician, the new hire will be the primary operator of the ice-resurfacer and ice-edger, ensuring that the rink is ready for every practice, game, and special event.
This position is classified as a temporary fixed-term appointment, offering a minimum hourly wage of $17.50. Compensation will be adjusted based on the applicant’s prior experience and demonstrated skill set. As a temporary employee, the role is limited to 1,040 hours per year and does not include the university’s full benefit package.
Core Responsibilities on the Ice
The coordinator’s daily agenda revolves around three main tasks: pre-event preparation, surface maintenance, and post-event cleanup. First, the employee will assess ice depth, remove debris, and scrape any imperfections. Using the ice-resurfacer, they will then apply a thin layer of water to create a smooth skating surface. After each event, the staff member must re-edge the rink and perform a quick inspection to confirm that the ice meets safety standards.
Beyond the technical duties, the role includes occasional assistance with broader sports-facility preparations and data-entry tasks, such as recording equipment usage statistics. These ancillary duties help the athletics department maintain accurate records and streamline future scheduling.
Required Experience and Preferred Skills
Applicants must have previously worked in an ice-management or rink-operations environment. Hands-on familiarity with both ice-resurfacing and ice-edging machines is essential. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a solid grasp of techniques for building, repairing, and preserving high-quality ice surfaces.
Because UVA-Madison’s athletic schedule often extends into evenings and weekends, the successful candidate must be flexible enough to work non-standard hours, including occasional weekday shifts when the calendar demands extra coverage.
How to Submit Your Application
Prospective employees should access the university’s Workday portal. After selecting either “I am a current employee” or “I am not a current employee,” applicants will be prompted to upload a single resume file that details relevant ice-rink experience. The system accepts only one attachment field, so combine all supporting documents into one PDF if necessary.
Reference checks will be performed for final candidates, and all applicants will receive notification once the selection process concludes. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of appointment.
