The City of Calgary is implementing changes to speed limits in the southeast community of Lake Bonavista, aiming to enhance road safety for residents. By the end of the year, drivers in the area will need to adjust to new speed regulations, with significant reductions on key roads.
Ward 14 Councillor Landon Johnston announced the changes, revealing that Lake Bonavista Drive will see its speed limit lowered from 50 km/h to 40 km/h. Similar reductions will be applied to Lake Crimson Drive and Lake Sylvan Drive addressing concerns about traffic safety in these residential areas.
Residents welcome safety improvements
Megan Smith, a resident of Lake Sylvan Drive, expressed relief at the upcoming changes. As a parent, she has been particularly concerned about the safety of her children, especially during school hours when they wait for the bus. “I’m worried about traffic and the speed and people seeing them,” Smith shared. “Our vehicles have been hit twice on the street, and there’s constant movement.”
Smith highlighted the challenges of living on a busy street, noting that Lake Sylvan Drive is the primary access route to Lake Downs. “This is the busiest street going down to Lake Downs, and it’s the only access to down there, so it’s a high traffic street and people just fly up and down that hill,” she explained. The new speed limits are expected to mitigate these risks and create a safer environment for all residents.
Citywide initiative to reduce road fatalities
The speed limit reductions are part of the City of Calgary’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate serious and fatal collisions on city roads. The city conducted a comprehensive review of over 700 collector roads and community entrance roads, identifying nearly 300 locations where lower speed limits could improve safety and consistency across Calgary.
The review considered current driving speeds, focusing on areas near schools, playground zones, residential driveways, and curves in the road. These adjustments are designed to encourage safer driving behaviors and reduce the risk of accidents. The city expects all changes to be implemented by the end of 2026.
So far in 2026, Calgary has recorded 21 fatal collisions resulting in 25 deaths including 6 pedestrian fatalities. The Vision Zero initiative seeks to address these troubling statistics by making roads safer for all users.
Additional changes expected in Ward 14
Councillor Johnston’s office indicated that more announcements regarding speed limit changes are forthcoming for other communities in Ward 14, including Midnapore, Sundance, Walden, and Mackenzie Lake. These updates will further align with the city’s broader efforts to enhance road safety and reduce traffic-related incidents.
