The haze emergency in Sarawak, Malaysia, has been officially lifted, but authorities warn that the threat of air pollution from forest fires in neighboring Indonesia remains significant. The emergency was declared earlier this week after air pollution levels reached hazardous levels in the Serian district, prompting widespread school closures and restrictions on outdoor activities.

The decision to lift the emergency comes as a relief to many, but the underlying issue of transboundary haze pollution persists. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Southeast Asian countries in managing the environmental impact of forest fires.

Emergency declaration and response

On Friday, September 4, 2026, Malaysia declared a state of emergency in the Serian district of Sarawak after the Air Pollutant Index (API) surged to hazardous levels. The API in Serian reached 521, while the capital city of Kuching recorded a hazardous reading of 311. The emergency declaration was approved by King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, allowing for more effective measures to be implemented.

In response to the emergency, 647 schools in Serian were closed, and government offices, plantations, construction sites, and quarries were ordered to suspend operations. Only essential services were permitted to continue. The state’s disaster management authorities also launched a three-day cloud-seeding operation to mitigate the effects of the haze.

Impact on neighboring regions

The haze crisis has not been limited to Sarawak. Neighboring states such as Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia have also experienced smoggy conditions. Brunei and Singapore have reported elevated air pollution levels, with Singapore announcing daily haze advisories. The Philippines has also been affected, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordering the suspension of classes in Metro Manila and several provinces.

The transboundary haze originates from forest and peat fires in Indonesia, particularly in the Kalimantan region and Sumatra island. Scientists predict that temperatures will peak this month, potentially intensifying the fires and worsening air quality across the region.

Efforts to combat the fires

Indonesian authorities have been actively working to combat the fires, deploying firefighting resources and attempting to induce rain. The Indonesian police have arrested 112 individuals suspected of starting the fires, primarily local farmers accused of deliberately burning land for clearance. Additionally, the business licenses of five companies have been suspended over alleged involvement in the fires.

Despite these efforts, the situation remains critical. Satellite data from Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry detected 717 hot spots nationwide, with 103 active hot spots in the past 24 hours alone. The prolonged dry conditions and elevated fire activity continue to contribute to the worsening pollution.

As the region grapples with the ongoing haze crisis, authorities and communities must remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect public health and safety.
