The Marrakech International Film Festival is poised to engage audiences with its 22nd edition, taking place from November 28 to December 6. This year’s festival features an impressive lineup of 82 films from 31 countries, promising a diverse array of storytelling and artistic expression.
Among the highlights, nine films will make their world or international debuts. Another nine films have benefited from the festival’s Atlas Workshops, which aim to cultivate emerging talent in the industry. Additionally, 14 films are competing for recognition in the race for the Academy Awards.

Another significant entry is James J. Robinson’s First Light, which explores the journey of a Filipino nun confronting her faith amid widespread corruption. This film has earned Robinson recognition as the best Australian director at the Melbourne Film Festival.

For example, Shih-Han Tsao’s Before the Bright Day reflects on Taiwan’s war anxieties in 1996, while Zamo Mkhwanazi’s Laundry depicts the aspirations of a South African man navigating the complexities of Apartheid.

This year’s festival emphasizes female empowerment and social justice themes. Notable films include Erige Sehiri’s Promised Sky, which depicts women uniting against racism in Tunisia, and Morad Mostafa’s Aisha Can’t Fly Away, a fantastical journey toward freedom in Cairo.
Additionally, the festival features documentaries such as Vladlena Sandu’s Memory and Jihane K.’s My Father and Qaddafi, which delve into personal and collective histories, enriching the context of the films’ narratives.

The festival will commence with the gala screening of Gus Van Sant’s satirical film Dead Man’s Wire, which critiques media and capitalism. Following this, Maryam Touzani’s poignant film Calle Málaga will portray the life of a woman within the Spanish community of Tangier, featuring renowned actress Carmen Maura.
Additionally, the festival will honor notable filmmakers. Guillermo del Toro will present his unique interpretation of Frankenstein, while Jodie Foster will showcase A Private Life, a film that combines elements of crime and humor.

The upcoming festival will showcase two world premieres featuring prominent figures from the Arab film industry. Marwan Hamed’s biopic El Sett chronicles the life of the iconic diva Oum Kalthoum. Additionally, Dhafer L’Abidine’s psychological thriller Sophia will also be featured.
The festival will conclude with Annemarie Jacir’s Palestine 36, which portrays a critical chapter in Palestinian history. This event emphasizes the richness of international cinema and the vibrancy of regional storytelling.
Beyond the main features, the Horizons section will present 19 contemporary films. This segment highlights both established and emerging filmmakers, including Claire Denis, Richard Linklater, and Jafar Panahi.
