Massive drug bust at Pharr International Bridge uncovers $10.8M stash

On July 6, agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas halted a commercial tractor-trailer that claimed to be transporting cabbage. A canine inspection triggered an alert, prompting officials to employ a nonintrusive imaging system. The scan revealed irregularities, leading to a full physical search that uncovered 477 concealed packages containing a staggering 532.1 kilograms (1,173 pounds) of suspected methamphetamine.

The hidden narcotics were estimated to hold a street value of $10,787,542. In addition to the drugs, CBP seized the tractor, trailer, and the legitimate cabbage cargo. Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, overseeing the Hidalgo Port of Entry, emphasized the relentless nature of the threat and the agency’s round-the-clock vigilance in deterring illegal activity at the nation’s borders.

Details of the interdiction operation

The inspection began when the truck entered the bridge’s commercial lane. CBP officers, following standard protocol, requested a secondary inspection based on the cargo’s manifest. The canine unit signaled a positive detection, after which the imaging system highlighted anomalies within the container’s interior. Officers then opened the trailer, discovering the concealed packages layered among the cabbage loads.

Each package was carefully documented, and the total weight of the suspected methamphetamine was measured at 532.1 kg. The haul represents one of the largest single-site seizures in recent years along the U.S.–Mexico corridor. The operation concluded with the confiscation of the narcotics, the transport vehicle, and the legitimate agricultural product, which will be rerouted according to federal regulations.

Implications for border security and drug enforcement

Under the administration of President Donald J. Trump and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, CBP continues to prioritize both the disruption of illicit trafficking and the facilitation of lawful travel and trade. This seizure underscores the agency’s layered approach—combining canine detection advanced imaging technology, and thorough manual inspections—to thwart sophisticated smuggling schemes.

Officials highlighted that the operation sends a clear message to traffickers: exploiting the United States’ borders carries significant risk. The success of the Pharr bust also demonstrates the importance of inter-agency collaboration and the dedication of personnel who operate around the clock.
