The Quarry 2 Fire, a significant brush fire in west Miami-Dade County, has rapidly expanded to 600 acres since it began on Monday afternoon. As of Wednesday morning, the fire was approximately 30% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service. The blaze has prompted air quality alerts and traffic disruptions in the area, affecting residents and commuters alike.
Aerial footage captured the extent of the fire, showing heavy smoke blanketing residential neighborhoods near Miami. The fire, which started near NW 137th Ave. and NW 25th St., has been a challenge for firefighting crews due to shifting wind conditions and dry vegetation. Despite these challenges, no injuries have been reported so far.
The Quarry 2 Fire: Containment Efforts and Challenges
Crews from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service responded to the initial grass fire near NW 137 Ave. and NW 41 St. at 2:56 p.m. on June 15. They encountered large columns of smoke in the area, which has complicated suppression efforts. The shifting wind conditions have made it difficult to predict the fire’s movement and contain its spread.
As of 12:40 a.m. on June 16, the fire had burned 600 acres, with containment efforts reaching 30%. The Florida Forest Service has been monitoring the situation closely, providing updates as conditions evolve. The combination of dry vegetation and shifting winds has contributed to the fire’s rapid spread and the production of widespread smoke.
Air Quality Alerts and Health Concerns
The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for Broward County due to near surface smoke from the Quarry 2 Fire. The alert, which remained in effect through 12 p.m. on June 16, warned residents about the potential health impacts of exposure to particulate matter and ground-level ozone.
These air pollutants can cause a range of health issues, including headaches, difficulty breathing, chest pain, asthma attacks, fatigue, increased coughing, and irritation of the eyes, throat, and sinuses. The NWS recommended that residents, particularly those unusually sensitive to particle pollutionmonitor local air quality and reduce outdoor activities during the alert.
Traffic Disruptions and Power Outages
The Doral Police Department reported that the fire had caused traffic disruptions in the Miami area. Power outages resulted in traffic signals stopping at key intersections, including NW 107 Ave. and NW 41 St., as well as NW 102 Ave. and NW 41 St. Officers were deployed to direct traffic and manage congestion, advising drivers to navigate carefully, prepare for delays, and take alternate routes if available.
As firefighting crews continue to battle the Quarry 2 Fire, officials are urging residents to stay informed about the latest developments. The fire’s impact on air quality and traffic highlights the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of such natural disasters.
