The aviation community is in shock following the Tragic Crash of an Amazon Air cargo jet at Miami International Airport on Sunday. The incident, involving a Boeing 767-33A operated by 21 Air has claimed the lives of five individuals and left five others injured. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the causes of this devastating event.
The flight, designated as Amazon Air Flight 7598 was en route from San Juan, Puerto Rico with two crew members on board. This was the aircraft’s third flight of the day, having previously traveled from Cincinnati to Miami and then to San Juan before the fatal return journey. The jet overshot the runway, striking navigational aids and equipment before colliding with a 2012 white Ford Econoline van owned by Professional Ocean Service Corporation a contract cleaning company for the airline. The van had seven occupants.
The Aftermath of the Crash
The aircraft continued its destructive path, breaching a perimeter fence and impacting a Toyota Corolla Cross LE traveling on Northwest 67th Avenue. The jet finally came to rest approximately 1,300 feet past the paved runway surface. The scene was described as devastating by Jennifer Homendy Chair of the NTSB, who noted the extensive damage to both the vehicles and the aircraft.
Video footage from the incident shows the Boeing 767 wobbling slightly during its approach, touching down far along the runway before overshooting. Flames and thick, dark smoke billowed from the jet after it came to rest in a parking lot. The crash trapped the pilot and copilot in the cockpit, as well as occupants in the vehicles it struck. Miami-Dade rescue fire chief Ray Jadallah described the situation as very complex with the plane crashing into multiple vehicles and trapping several people inside.
Investigation and Key Focus Areas
The NTSB is focusing on several critical areas in their investigation, including operations and human performanceflight crew experience and the policies and contractual relationship between Amazon and 21 Air. Other areas of interest include air traffic servicesradar dataaircraft performance and structure and meteorological conditions at the time of the crash.
A significant aspect of the investigation is the lack of an Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) at the end of the runway. EMAS is a crushable, lightweight material designed to safely stop an aircraft that overshoots the runway. Homendy emphasized that the NTSB’s focus during the initial phase will be on documenting the scene and collecting perishable evidence, rather than determining the probable cause.
Eyewitness Accounts and Expert Opinions
Eyewitnesses described the crash as surreal and like something from a movie. Grace Mercado, who was near the crash site with her partner, recounted hearing an extremely loud noise and seeing the plane crash. Her partner, a firefighter, was ready to help but emergency services responded immediately.
Aviation safety expert Steve Arroyo noted that typically, the landing zone is within the first 3,000 feet of a runway. If the plane was beyond this area, it should have aborted the landing and attempted another approach. Mary Schiavo a pilot and former inspector general of the transportation department, observed that the plane appeared to be floating above the runway for an extended period without flaring the nose upward to ensure a proper landing. She suggested that a tailwind could have contributed to the plane floating further down the runway.
The crash has had a significant impact on airport operations, with more than 160 flights canceled and nearly 325 delayed by late Sunday. Flights later resumed, although two runways at the busy airport remained out of service on Monday morning.
The investigation into this tragic event is ongoing, with the NTSB deeply committed to determining the causes and preventing similar accidents in the future.
