In a dramatic shift, Microsoft’s Xbox division is undergoing its most significant restructure in history announcing over 3,000 layoffs and parting ways with five development studios. This bold move, announced by CEO Asha Sharma aims to reset the brand and address current challenges in the gaming industry.
The decision comes as the industry faces its most severe hardware crisis with Xbox operating at margins significantly lower than comparable businesses. Sharma emphasized the need for a reset to ensure the company’s growth and sustainability.
Studios and Layoffs: A New Direction for Xbox
Among the studios affected are Compulsion GamesDouble Fine ProductionsNinja TheoryUndead Labs and Arkane Studios. These studios will either go independent or be sold to new owners. Compulsion Games and Double Fine will become independent, retaining their intellectual property and game catalogs. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have entered terms for new ownership, with plans to complete and grow titles like Senua and State of Decay 3 both targeting a release.
The fate of Arkane Studios, based in Lyon, France, is still under review. The studio is currently working on Marvel’s Blade which has reportedly faced cancellation. Layoffs will also affect other studios such as Activision, Bethesda/Zenimax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios. Approximately 3,200 employees will be laid off throughout fiscal year, with 1,600 employees terminated immediately.
Streamlining Operations and Leadership Changes
To streamline management, Sharma announced a reduction in management layers to no more than five, and where possible, three. This move aims to simplify decision-making and improve accountability. The current management structure, with up to 14 layers in some parts of the company, has slowed decisions and blurred accountability.
Leadership changes include the promotion of Helen Chiang corporate VP at Microsoft and head of Mojang, to chief operating officer (COO) of Xbox. Chiang will replace Dave McCarthy who is retiring after a 17-year career at Xbox. Mojang and King will now report directly to Sharma.
The Future of Xbox: A Vision for Growth
Sharma’s vision for Xbox includes a focus on Game Pass multi-platform strategies, and a broader portfolio of content. Despite the layoffs, none of Xbox’s publicly announced games or projects will be canceled. The goal is to return to growth in and become one of the few companies that entertain more than a billion people each day.
Sharma’s message to the team underscored the importance of adaptability and innovation. ‘History is full of companies that mistake longevity for inevitability,’ she wrote. ‘We will not be one of them.’ This reset aims to position Xbox for a successful future in the ever-evolving gaming industry.
