A devastating flash flood has struck the border region between Nepal and China leaving a trail of destruction and uncertainty. Among the missing is Mohit Kaushik a 49-year-old man from Winnipeg who was on a sacred pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar when the disaster occurred.
The flood, triggered by a glacier collapse generated seismic activity equivalent to a 5.2-magnitude earthquake. The disaster has left nearly 2,000 people missing and hundreds dead, according to reports. The affected area is a popular tourist region along the Himalayan border known for its spiritual significance to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers.
The Pilgrimage and the Missing
Mohit Kaushik was part of a tour group organized by Kailash Journeys Ltd. which included five Nepali guides and 26 international travelers from countries like Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The group was undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra a multi-day trek with profound religious and spiritual significance.
The last known location of Kaushik was near the Timure-Rasuwagadhi border area between Tibet and Nepal. His family, including his daughter Kalista Kaushik is awaiting more official information and has requested privacy during this difficult time. Anita Anand Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that 31 Canadians are among those missing.
The Aftermath and Rescue Efforts
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly through mud and debris to search for survivors. As of the latest reports, 579 bodies have been recovered, but no Canadians have been confirmed among the deceased.
