Montreal Couple Arrested for Stealing Jewelry from Funeral Niches

Montreal police have arrested a couple accused of stealing jewelry from funeral niches across the region. Find out how families can check if their loved ones' resting places were targeted.

Montreal Couple Arrested for Stealing Jewelry from Funeral Niches

The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) has made a significant breakthrough in a series of unsettling thefts that have targeted funeral homes across the region. On May 14, authorities arrested a couple suspected of breaking into columbarium niches to steal jewelry and other valuables placed with the deceased. The thefts, which occurred over the past year, have affected funeral centers in Montreal, Laval, the North Shore, and as far as Saint-Hyacinthe on the South Shore.

The investigation has led to the recovery of a substantial amount of jewelry, which police are now working to return to their rightful owners. However, authorities believe that many families may not yet be aware that their loved one’s niche was targeted. The SPVM is urging relatives and funeral home representatives to inspect the condition of the niches and report any thefts promptly.

Identifying the Suspects

The suspects in this case have been identified as André Diderot Gustave, 49, and Christina Loubounakis, 50. Gustave is described as a Black man, approximately 1.85 meters tall and weighing 110 kilograms, with black eyes and a shaved head. Loubounakis is described as a white woman, about 1.7 meters tall and weighing 90 kilograms, with brown eyes and black hair usually tied back.

How Families Can Recover Stolen Items

Families who suspect they may have been affected are encouraged to contact their local police service with detailed information. This includes the name of the deceased, a description of any missing items, photographs if available, the name of the funeral home, the niche number, and an approximate timeframe for the theft. In Montreal, reports can be made at local neighborhood stations.

The Importance of Prompt Reporting

Prompt reporting is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it helps investigators piece together the timeline of events and identify patterns that may lead to additional suspects or related crimes. Secondly, it allows police to reunite families with their stolen heirlooms as quickly as possible, providing some measure of closure during a difficult time.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses. The SPVM is committed to ensuring that all stolen items are returned to their rightful owners and that those responsible for these desecrations are brought to justice.

In the meantime, the community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around funeral homes or columbarium niches. Together, we can help protect the sanctity of these sacred spaces and ensure that families can mourn their loved ones in peace.
