In Burnaby, British Columbia, something quite unusual has been happening—a series of paintball shootings that have raised eyebrows and concerns among the locals. Imagine driving home at night when suddenly, out of nowhere, your car is bombarded with paintballs! That’s exactly what happened to several residents, prompting the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to step in and investigate these bizarre incidents. It’s a situation that makes you wonder, just how safe is our community?

Details of the Incidents

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the paintball attacks began on a Saturday evening, turning what should have been an ordinary night into a chaotic scene. One resident, Ryan Bonato, shared his harrowing experience while driving late at night. “All of a sudden, just out of nowhere, the car just started getting hit,” Bonato recalled, describing how paintballs pelted his windshield and door.

Bonato quickly pinpointed the source of the chaos—a group of young men hiding in the bushes. Instead of panicking, he decided to follow the suspects as they sped away in a black vehicle, still firing paintballs in his direction. Smartly, he held off on using his windshield wipers, fearing it would smear the paint and obscure his view.

Despite Bonato’s quick thinking, the suspects managed to slip away after reaching a dead end. The police tried to track them down with the help of canine units, but unfortunately, they came up empty-handed. To make matters worse, RCMP spokesperson Cst. Mike Kalanj revealed that the vehicle involved is believed to be stolen, adding another layer of concern to this troubling series of events.

Additional Reports and Police Response

Bonato’s experience wasn’t a one-off. Earlier that same evening, the RCMP received reports of two other paintball incidents. The first occurred just after 8 p.m. near Carleton Avenue and Charles Street, where a victim reported being shot at by suspects wearing ski masks from an unknown vehicle. Thankfully, this individual was unharmed, but the suspects managed to escape just before the police could arrive.

Not long after, another report surfaced from near Willingdon Avenue and Pandora Street. This time, a 13-year-old boy suffered minor injuries in a paintball attack. Like before, the suspects, also in a vehicle, got away before the police arrived, partly due to a delay in reporting the incident.

In light of these unsettling events, the RCMP are urging community members to stay alert and report any suspicious activity. Kalanj stressed the seriousness with which they are treating these reports, reaffirming their commitment to keeping Burnaby residents safe.

Community Reactions and Ongoing Concerns

As word of the paintball attacks spread, residents reacted with a mix of disbelief and concern. Bonato reflected on his experience, noting how adrenaline and shock can cloud judgment in such unexpected moments. He recognized the potential for what could have escalated into a more dangerous situation, underscoring the importance of community safety.

“Afterwards, when you get home at the end of it all and the adrenaline all goes down, you think about all the ways it could’ve played out,” he said, highlighting the need for vigilance in unpredictable circumstances.

The ongoing investigation into these paintball incidents serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of public safety and the need for community cooperation in tackling such alarming activities. The RCMP continues to seek information from the public to assist in locating the suspects and preventing any further incidents. So, what can we do as a community to ensure our safety? Keeping an eye out and staying informed could make all the difference.
