The Wall of Mud and Water
Raja described the moment she saw the flood approaching their bus as they traveled to the Chinese border. It was water mixed with the mud that was a good 50 to 60 feet high she told ABC News. The sight was akin to a cobra’s head staring at you a terrifying image that left no room for hesitation.
Without a moment to spare, Raja grabbed her husband and urged everyone to run. Leave the bus right away or we’re gonna die she shouted, her instincts kicking in to save their lives. The couple and other passengers ran to a nearby camp and climbed to higher ground as the floodwaters engulfed the streets below.
We just blindly…climbed. We didn’t even know what direction… There was no guide for us, there was nobody, we were just frantically running. Running, literally running. It was slushy, it was muddy, we were climbing rocks, which was slippery. We just ran for our life, Raja recalled.
Rescue Efforts and Ongoing Threats
As of Friday, the death toll has risen to 584, with over 2,400 people reported missing, according to the Nepal National Disaster Management Authority and the Chinese government. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to find survivors and provide aid to those affected.
However, the danger is not yet over. Authorities have issued fresh alerts about the risk of further flooding from a barrier lake that formed after the initial disaster. The lake, located high up in the Chinese side of the Himalayan mountains, poses a significant threat to the already devastated region.
Nepal police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle urged rescue and relief workers to stay on high alert and move to safer locations if necessary. The rescue operation is continuing, but the situation remains critical.

Vishnuram Ramaswamy, who works in the southern Indian city of Puducherry, is desperately trying to locate his mother and two sisters who were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. He last spoke to them on Wednesday morning, and they have been unreachable since.
This was the first time they had gone on this pilgrimage and it was something my mother always wanted to do, Ramaswamy said, highlighting the personal significance of the journey that turned tragic.
