As Netflix marks a decade in the Asia Pacific region, it has announced an ambitious lineup tailored for the Japanese audience in 2026. The streaming platform aims to expand its offerings in both anime and live-action series, while also venturing into unscripted content. A notable feature is its debut in international live sports broadcasting, with plans to stream all 47 games of the 2026 World Baseball Classic from March 5 to 18.

The first project from this collaboration is the reboot titled Human Vapor, which features a blend of talent from both Japan and Korea.

In this partnership, Sakamoto described the initiative as a transformative step in Japanese sci-fi. “By reinventing Toho Studios’ renowned tokusatsu legacy and collaborating with prominent creators from Japan and Korea, we aim to forge a groundbreaking series that redefines the genre.” This approach underscores Netflix’s commitment to innovation within established frameworks while enhancing storytelling depth.

Diverse content offerings

The live-action segment features several exciting titles. Quiztopia, starring Yamada Takayuki, is based on a cult manga and explores themes of desire and power through a dystopian quiz show where winning brings rewards, but losing leads to dire consequences. Another anticipated series is Straight to Hell, premiering on April 27. This narrative spans six decades and follows the life of Hosoki Kazuko, Japan’s most famous fortune-teller, portrayed by Toda Erika. On April 2, audiences can anticipate Sins of Kujo, a legal drama featuring Yagira Yuya as a defense attorney representing society’s outcasts. This series, produced by acclaimed TBS creator Nasuda Atsushi, promises to delve into the complexities of morality and justice.

Additionally, the romantic drama Soul Mate is set to debut on May 14, focusing on two young men whose lives intertwine over a decade. Following a life-altering incident, Narutaki Ryu finds comfort in the company of a Korean boxer, played by Ok Taec-yeon.
